#BCTECH Summit Spotlight– Technology and the Social Fabric of Our Food Systems: Transforming and Diversifying Agricultural Models.

Food is at the core of our social fabric and we need our food systems to be efficient, productive, sustainable and safe – from seed to market. BC’s agrifood sector is one of the most diverse in North America, with more than 20,000 farms and 1,800 food processing firms in the province. Our innovative technology sector is developing new methods to increase diversity, sustainability, productivity and market growth in the face of climate change and population growth.

On March 15th at the #BCTECH Summit, we’ll explore how technology is revolutionizing our agricultural models and take a look at the challenges encountered and successes achieved in BC’s agritech industry. Here’s a peek at some of the topics up for discussion as part of the stream: Technology and the Social Fabric of Our Food Systems: Transforming and Diversifying Agricultural Models.

  • Setting the Stage. What Would We Do If?– Planning for the future means considering all possible outcomes and preparing for different scenarios. Rickey Yada, Dean of Land and Food Systems at UBC shares his thoughts.
  • Why Agritech?– What are the trends driving agritech and how are they impacting the future of agriculture? Hear President and CEO of Bioenterprise Corporation Dave Smardon’s perspective in this session
  • Proof is in the Pond Scum. Genomics as the Key to Early Detection of Avian Influenza– An outbreak of avian influenza can be devastating. Michelle Coombe from the School of Population and Public Health at UBC explains how genomics are being used to catch outbreaks early.
  • Cornucopia of Ideas: Pitches from the Agtech Challenge– Hear from the Agtech Challenge winners themselves as they present their pitches.

Designed for growers, processors, transporters and folks working in crop management and food security, this stream will shed light on the work being done to keep BC’s agrifood sector competitive and sustainable, with an eye on the future.
